UPDATE: Man in custody after alleged impaired hit-and-run in downtown Kelowna

The victim remains in serious yet stable condition after being struck Saturday night

The victim of a hit and run is in serious yet stable condition after being struck by a vehicle Saturday night.

A 23-year-old Kelowna man has been arrested by RCMP and was investigated for impaired driving after not remaining at the site of the accident and later being found in West Kelowna.

The suspects notably damaged vehicle was reported to police crossing the Bennett bridge.

“It was heartening to see countless bystanders stop to provide assistance and comfort to the pedestrian who lay injured in the roadway,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP.

“We are now encouraging anyone who witnessed the collision unfold to contact police immediately with your information. Furthermore, if any motorist has any dash camera footage of the event, they are urged to contact the Kelowna RCMP immediately.”

Police received the reports of the hit-and-run around 6:45 p.m. Saturday at the Bernard Avenue and Lakeview Street intersection.

The suspect faces potential charges and is expected to appear in court at a later date.

UPDATE: 10:40 p.m. Saturday

Kelowna RCMP have made an arrest in the hit and run on Bernard Avenue.

Investigators believe they’ve located the vehicle involved in the crash and an arrest was made but RCMP continue to investigate the scene.

There is no update from RCMP on the medical status of the pedestrian at this time.

Witnesses who have not yet come forward are urged to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

A pedestrian was struck Saturday evening on Highland Road and Bernard Avenue just before 7 p.m.

One witness said the driver is of the vehicle involved in the incident did not remain on scene.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
