A Nanaimo man will spend the next 30 days in jail for uttering threats to staff at the Palace Hotel Saturday.

Around 1 a.m., employees at the Skinner Street bar received complaints from patrons that a man was brandishing an X-acto knife on the dance floor.

Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, said the man threatened to “slit the throats” of staff members when he was asked to leave.

At the time of the threat, the knife was in the man’s hand, but the blade was not extended. He left the bar and threw the knife away.

Police arrested the man and a search of the area turned up the knife.

Robert William Danard, 51, pleaded guilty to uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in Nanaimo provincial court Tuesday.

He is prohibited from carrying firearms or any type of weapon for five years.
