UPDATE: Mariachi frog turned over to RCMP, band back together

Police say allegedly stolen decoration was brought to the detachment in a midnight dropoff

The band is back together.

A mariachi frog ornament that had been reported stolen was returned to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment in a midnight dropoff over the weekend.

Police had put out a call to the public for help finding the metal decoration, which was allegedly stolen from a pickup truck parked on Stewart Avenue last month.

A Nanaimo RCMP press release noted that the late-night return of the stolen item played out “like a John le Carré spy thriller,” with a man in a dark-coloured sedan moving quickly to drop off the item and leave the Prideaux Street area Saturday.

Police say the frog seemed to have sustained a few dents and scrapes, but is in good shape.

“We are so pleased that Mariachi frog didn’t croak and we were able to reunite him with the other band members,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in the release.
