Corporation says Friday conditions are 'boisterous'

Rough seas are keeping B.C. Ferries vessels at the docks today.

The ferry corporation cancelled several Friday, Jan. 3 sailings, including the 5:45 p.m. ferry from Duke Point to Tsawwassen and the 8:15 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Duke Point.

B.C. Ferries also announced several sailings are cancelled on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route, including the 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. boats from Victoria and the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. boats from Tsawwassen.

Sailings have been cancelled for the remainder of the day on the Comox-Powell River route.

The 6:15 a.m., 8:25 a.m., 10:40 a.m. and 1 p.m. boats to and from Nanaimo’s Departure Bay and West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay were cancelled, but sailings are now resuming on that route.

A service notice from B.C. Ferries early Friday pointed to adverse weather conditions.

“It’s a little boisterous out there this morning, as sailings have already been cancelled due to the high winds,” noted a social media post from B.C. Ferries.

There is a modified schedule in effect for the rest of the day on certain routes, according to a service notice. Departure Bay sailings are now scheduled for 3:20 p.m., 5:55 p.m., 8:45 p.m. and 10:10 p.m. Horseshoe Bay sailings are slated to depart at 3:45 p.m., 6:35 p.m., 8:05 p.m. and 10:55 p.m.

The Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route was also modified. Sailings are now scheduled to leave Horseshoe Bay at 11:55 a.m., 2:10 p.m., 4:20 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 8:40 p.m. and 10:55 p.m. Sailings from Gibsons to Horseshoe Bay are scheduled for 1:05 p.m., 3:15 p.m., 5:25 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:35 p.m.

The ferry corp. also cancelled the 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. sailings to and from Tsawwassen and Nanaimo’s Duke Point.

The Campbell River-Quadra Island route was affected as well, as sailings have been cancelled since mid-morning and have not yet resumed.

The Powell River-Texada Island route saw the 11:25 a.m. sailing from Texada’s Blubber Bay cancelled, as well as the 12:15 p.m. from Powell River.

Also today, sailings between Cortes Island and Quadra Island were cancelled through to 1:05 p.m.

The service notice from B.C. Ferries apologized for inconvenience to passengers and advised that it would resume service “as soon as it is safe to do so.”
