Multiple people were injured after a two-vehicle collision on 176 Street, near 28B Avenue, in South Surrey Thursday afternoon.
Surrey RCMP said the call came in at 12:40 p.m. and that one woman sustained “serious” injuries and was transported to hospital, while two others sustained minor injuries.
One patient was taken to hospital by air ambulance, and a section of the highway was closed for several hours while RCMP investigated.
Former Conservative MP Dianne Watts, who lives in the area, was at the scene shortly after the collision.
“A horrific accident scene in front of my house caused by distracted driving. The driver was hit by an oncoming vehicle who crossed into oncoming traffic,” Watts tweeted, adding that “several witnesses” told her distracted driving was at play.
However, Surrey RCMP told PAN Wednesday that the collision is still under investigation, and police are not in a position to confirm whether or not distracted driving was a contributing factor.
Later Thursday afternoon, Watts shared a tweet, which was apparently sent to her by a friend or family member of the woman who sustained serious injuries.
“The loving Mom of 2 is beat up but she’ll be herself. She has broken ribs, lung collapsed, Concusion, broken wrist shattered forearm with protrusion, broken pelvis, left femur with protruding bone not sure about ankles or left hand feeling,” according to the tweet, which was posted by Kelly Vanderlee.

White Rock resident Paul Dukes told PAN Thursday he was one of the first people on the scene.
When Dukes arrived, at approximately 1 p.m., he said he pulled over and helped stop oncoming traffic.
“I couldn’t leave, I had to get involved some way,” Dukes said.
He said one woman appeared to have broken a wrist, and a man had sustained a head injury.
“I’ve never seen anything that bad in my life,” Dukes told PAN. “There was debris all over the road.”
Dukes said he saw emergency responders use the Jaws of Life to rescue one of the injured people.
RCMP are requesting any dash-cam video of the collision, or leading up to the collision. Police would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash who has not already spoken to RCMP.
