UPDATE: Sunday, Sept. 30 7 p.m.

Two Saanich men are in custody after the pair allegedly broke into a home in Royal Oak, assaulted the occupant and robbed them.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Saanich police responded to a call in the 700-block of Paskin Way where two men age 32 and 42 were found to have committed a break and enter.

The investigation led to a home in the 4100-block of Barrington Road where witnesses say officers, including a tactical unit and the BC Ambulance Service, were on scene for much of the day.

In a statement released in the early evening, Saanich Detective Sergeant Damian Kowalewich said the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called in to “safely arrest those believed to be responsible.”

According to witnesses as many as 18 officers were seen coming and going down Barrington Road, a cul-de-sac near the intersection of Carey Road and Baker Street over the course of the day.

“All parties involved are known to each other and there is no risk to the public,” Kowalewich said, adding the victim of the break and enter was not injured.

The Saanich Police Detective Division and the Forensic Identification have taken over the investigation.

The incident was the second time Saanich police had a heavy presence on Carey Road in less than 24 hours.

A 41-year-old man is in hospital after an incident that occured Saturday just before 3:30 p.m. in the 3900-block of Carey Road. The area remained cordoned off with police tape Sunday.

Neighbours in the area said it looked like flash bombs were set off on at the residence on Barrington Road before the suspects were apprehended, after what appeared to be a stand-off.

One witness said police had drawn their weapons amidst police vehicles that included an armoured vehicle as well as a tactical unit.
