Power has now been restored to 27,000 Parksville Qualicum Beach BC Hydro customers.
A transmission line that feeds the area from Nanoose Bay north to Fanny Bay was knocked out just after 12 p.m. on Sept. 5, according to BC Hydro community relations manager for Vancouver Island-Sunshine Coast, Ted Olynyk.
“We don’t have any indication what happened, why there was a down line. Fortunately, we had a transmission crew in the area to help,” said Olynyk.
Olynyk says that one down transmission line would not normally cause an outage, but the second transmission line that feeds the Parksville Qualicum Beach area was out for scheduled maintenance.

He says this was bad timing for the second line to go down.
“Fortunately crews were able to deal with this fairly quickly, we had crews go into the substation, do some switching, and bring the line that was out for regular maintenance, and bring that back on quickly,” said Olynyk.
Power has now been restored to all customers, he said.
During the outage, drivers across the area were forced to use four-way stops as traffic lights were out.
