An individual who was airlifted to hospital following a serious crash on Highway 1 near 232 Street Thursday night is expected to survive.
The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries after being rear-ended while travelling westbound on the highway, just after 7 p.m. The force of the crash pushed the vehicle across the median into eastbound traffic, where it collided with another vehicle, confirmed police spokesperson Cpl. Melissa Wutke.
Two cars also caught fire, leading to a closure of the highway, Wutke said.
“It was a rear-ender collision that happened with a bit of speed,” Wutke told the Langley Times.
“The vehicle that was struck was pushed, went through the median and came up on the oncoming eastbound traffic and struck a vehicle on that side.”
One person was airlifted to hospital, and another was taken to hospital for observation. There were no other injuries reported, Wutke said.
“All in all, everyone, medically, was very lucky that no life was lost,” Wutke said.
During the closure, eastbound traffic was backed up almost as far as 200 Street.
Traffic was flowing again in both directions a few hours after the crash.
