Like so many other school districts across the province and Canada as a whole, School District 78 has been forced to adapt due to COVID-19.
In a letter dated Wednesday, March 25, Superintendent Karen Nelson said the school district, principals and teachers will begin working together after spring break to develop learning opportunity plans to supplement education for the remainder of the year.
“It is our goal to have these plans finalized by April 2, 2020 and communicated to parents by April 3, 2020 in preparation for engagement with students by April 6, 2020,” Nelson wrote. “We do not have all the specific information available regarding these plans, but please be assured that the information will be provided by the administrator of each school and your child’s classroom teacher prior to April 6, 2020.”

On March 17, Rob Fleming, the B.C. Minister of Education, ordered an indefinite suspension for all classes kindergarten through grade 12 to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Every student will receive a final mark and all students on track to move on to the next grade will do so in the fall, and all students scheduled to graduate from grade 12 will graduate. The ministry is working with post secondary institutions to ensure the transition of future freshmen is as smooth as possible.
All playgrounds on school district property are officially closed as of the end of Monday, March 23 to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

“I understand these are challenging and uncertain times,” Nelson concluded the letter. “As Dr. Bonnie Henry, Public Health Officer, has stated: ‘We need to remember to be kind, be calm and be safe. We will get through this together.'”
In addition to the learning opportunities being formulated, the school district has launched a web portal for the most up-to-date coronavirus as it pertains to the district. You can find it through their website at http://sd78.bc.ca/.
