Update: A 2020 Maverick Trail side by side that was stolen outside Ladysmith Motorsports on Monday, January 27 has been found and returned to Ladysmith Motorsports.
“Somebody called in and gave us a tip, so we went and we got it,” Sarah Asselin of Ladysmith Motorsports said.
The theft took place around 4:15 pm. A man in a black Adidas hoodie came into the store with a black toque and his hood up. Mike Wiebe, a salesman with Ladysmith Motorsports said the man behaved suspiciously in the store.
“Right off the bat he was a little bit sketchy, a little bit covered up,” Wiebe said.
Wiebe was preparing to move the units back into the store at the end of the night, and had just put they keys in the ignition of two units. After placing a key in a quad, Wiebe tried to go inside to grab something he forgot, but the thief was taking off with the side by side before he even set foot in the store.
“As soon as I opened the door I heard the machine start up. I was standing right on the curb, he just about hit me,” Wiebe said.
The thief sped out of the parking lot and fled down Rocky Creek Road toward Bumper to Bumper. Wiebe said he then saw some taillights by the abandoned Ladysmith Car Care building on the Trans Canada highway.
Ladysmith Motorsports had completed work on nearly $8,000 worth of accessories for the $21,000 unit for a customer who was ready to pick it up on Saturday. The theft would have resulted in a loss of over $30,000.
