A multi-vehicle collision on the outskirts of Telkwa Oct. 29 occurred when a police vehicle struck a pickup truck according to an RCMP press release issued this afternoon. The collision sent the RCMP vehicle head first into a transport truck and closed the highway for six hours.
Initial reports suggested occupants of all three vehicles were injured and taken to hospital, but the release states it was only the two police officers who were injured.
“There were no reported injuries from the occupants of the other two vehicles,” the release stated.
Smithers RCMP Staff Sgt. Terry Gillespie said the incident occurred on the hill leaving the village on the eastern side near Hankin Rd. at approximately 6 p.m.

The officers were transported to Bulkley Valley District Hospital for treatment. Their injuries are described as minor to serious, but Gillespie said they were not life-threatening or life-altering.
The release notes that an investigation is being conducted by North District Traffic Services and that “while causal factors have yet to be determined, weather and road conditions at the time of the crash were reported to be poor, with snow and ice covered roads.
That afternoon was the beginning of the snowstorm that dumped 18 cm of snow in the Bulkley Valley overnight Oct. 29 to 30.
