UPDATE: Two Agassiz shops hit in break and enter attempt

The Friday incidents may have been connected to a similar break and enter at the Hope Pharmacy

Two downtown Agassiz businesses were hit in what staff believes could have been an attempted break and enter early Friday morning (Sept. 27).

According to Shoppers Drug Mart manager Yvonne Swerhun, both Red Apple and Shoppers Drug Mart were hit early Friday morning. Security camera footage showed a rock being thrown as Shoppers’ front window around 4:30 a.m., she said, and the footage showed police arriving on scene shortly after.

“We saw the person throw the rock on the window trying to break in,” she said. “They couldn’t get in.”

No staff members were in the store at the time.

The Agassiz RCMP confirmed that the Red Apple was also broken into Friday morning. It too had a broken window, with a large hole in the glass, which would have allowed entry into the building.

Staff at Red Apple were unable to comment on the incident, and Swerhun said she didn’t know if Red Apple was targeted before or after Shoppers.

Both shops were replacing their windows Friday afternoon.

Later Friday morning, the Hope Pharmacy also experienced a break and enter. Although Sgt. Mike Sargent said he couldn’t speak to the specifics of that incident, it appears the three may be related.

Both the Agassiz RCMP and Swerhun are asking that anyone who may have seen anything or anyone suspicious contact the police.

“It’s just really crazy,” she said. “There’s been a lot of things going on in town, with … some people breaking in, or sometimes people would go into other people’s driveways.

“Hopefully we will have a good neighbourhood watch.”
