A large fire in a shop in a Chilliwack residential area was spewing black smoke Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters from four halls were dispatched to the 9400 block of Woodbine Street around 2:45 p.m. on March 17. The sound of explosions could be heard in the area, and the crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames visible from a detached workshop at the back of the property.
As the blaze raged, Chilliwack RCMP controlled the scene, moving pedestrians away and keeping Woodbine Street closed at Maple Avenue. BC Ambulance Service was also on scene.
Several hoses were hooked up to a nearby water supply, and firefighters attacked the aggressive blaze as it threatened nearby buildings. Of particular concern was a large complex with several units directly to the north of the shop.
A coordinated defensive strategy got the fire under control, and neighboring structures suffered minor heat damage.
The shop sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage but there were no firefighter or civilian injuries.
