Fire spread to nearby brush

Five fire halls were called out on Wednesday night at 9:14 p.m. to a fire on North Road, across the Cowichan Valley Highway from Duncan Meadows Golf Course.

The fire was in an old barn that was not used for livestock, so no animals were in danger, according to North Cowichan South End Fire Chief Rob MacDowell.

“It was in a big barn and it spread up into the brush a bit. We were there until about 2 a.m. and we just went back to check now. It’s out,” he said.

Police had the road blocked off at the highway and wouldn’t let anything other than emergency vehicles through.

MacDowell said that 19 firefighters were called out from North Cowichan South End, and 12 from Duncan, plus five from Sahtlam, two from Crofton, and five forestry fire crew.

“We needed their tenders (tankers),” MacDowell said.
