UPDATED: Help being sought to find stolen speed sign

Help is being sought to track down the person who stole the digital speedometer on Nichol road earlier this week.

The $3,000 sign, which showed you your speed as you drove through the school zone, was stolen sometime Monday in the late afternoon or early evening, said Tracey Vopni, the chair of the Arrow Heights Elementary school Parent Advisory Committee.

Vopni, who set up the sign and took it down daily, said she showed up Jan. 24 to put the sign in her blue mini-van only to find it wasn’t there.

“I was hopeful on Monday that it might turn up on Tuesday,” she said. “I thought some nice parent wanted to look after it for the night. On Tuesday I let the police know.”

The Revelstoke RCMP said they were following up on some leads but had not identified a suspect yet.

Spokesperson Cpl. Rod Wiebe said they were following up on a post on the Stoke List by someone claiming he had the sign.

“We’re taking that very seriously and that’s one of the leads were following up on,” he said.

Vopni said the speedometer was locked to the speed limit sign on Nichol Road and that the thief would have had to either cut the lock or lift the sign over the post.

“You could see they walked ten feet away from the pole and then you could see there were a few footsteps where they were obviously loading it into a vehicle,” she said. “If there was any vehicle parked right there that wasn’t a mini-van, that’s the vehicle we’re looking for.”

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Revelstoke RCMP at 250-837-5255 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.bccrimestoppers.com.
