UPDATED: Langley City house fire leaves ‘significant’ damage, residents not allowed to return

All three occupants escaped safely

Langley City residents were not permitted to return home after a Tuesday evening blaze left “significant” damage to their two-storey home, according to the deputy fire chief.

“I don’t foresee them being about to go back into the house for some time,” said Scott Kennedy.

Crews were called around 5:20 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday, Nov. 3), bringing firefighters and paramedics to the small side street shared by single-family and multi-unit homes.

There were three occupants of the home at the time of the fire, but they are safe, Kennedy confirmed.

“They did manage to self-evacuate and get out,” he said.

Kennedy believes neighbours assisted by recognizing there was a fire at the back of the home.

“It (the fire damage) appears to be in the interior, but towards the rear of the house,” he explained.

Emergency crews had 52nd Avenue blocked off with vehicles, and motorists were also warned to expect delays along 203rd Street.

Due to the extend of the damage to the home, the residents were not permitted to return and were provided emergency accommodations, food, and clothing, Kennedy said.

“We did manage, with the assistance of firefighters, to go back in and get some personal belongings for them that weren’t damaged, but they weren’t able to reside back in the house,” he noted.

Cause of the fire is not yet known; crews are investigating Wednesday morning.
