A man reportedly lighting fires with a blowtorch sparked emergency crews into action Tuesday.
Vernon Fire Rescue was first called to a grass fire along the railway tracks and fenceline around the 4500 block of 31st Street near Sunshine Autographics around 3:15 p.m. May 18. The fire was approximately 20 by 40 feet in size and was quickly extinguished.
Minutes later, a second fire was reported behind Chasers Bottle Depot. Bystanders started to douse the fire with portable fire extinguishers.
“Witnesses at the scene told investigators that a man, believed to be responsible for lighting the fires, was seen leaving the area as fire crews arrived,” RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said. “Police located the suspect who was arrested, and later released without charges.”
No injuries were reported and no structures were impacted in either incident.
The incident remains under investigation. RCMP are asking anyone who has information or witnessed the incident and has not already spoken to police, to contact Const. Lipsett at the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171.
