Victoria Police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) arrested a man in the 1700-block of Richmond Avenue just after 11 a.m. Sunday morning, following a several hour long standoff.

Victoria Police were called to the Royal Richmond apartment building on Richmond Avenue, near the intersection with Fort Street, just after 6 a.m. Sunday morning after a “serious assault”.
Police said the victim was able to flee the building, but the man who allegedly committed the assault refused to leave the apartment. The victim was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said out of an abundance of caution, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene. Several residents reported hearing loud flash bangs at approximately 9:15 a.m. as police worked to arrest the man.
Traffic was closed along the 1700-block of Richmond Road near the intersection at Fort Street Sunday morning. Traffic returned to normal on Richmond Ave. shortly after the arrest.
Police said the investigation is still in the early stages and further information will be released “when appropriate”.
