A 78-year-old man was airlifted to hospital Saturday after being struck by a pickup truck in Parksville.

The incident took place in the parking lot of the Mid-Island Co-op gas station at 222 Island Hwy E, at approximately 11 a.m. on Dec. 29.

“A vehicle driven by a lone man from Parksville, 42 years old, struck a 78-year-old Parksville man who was a pedestrian,” said Cpl. Jesse Foreman with Oceanside RCMP. “He fell and hit the ground, a possible head injury. He was unconscious and flown to Victoria General Hospital.”

The man was loaded into a helicopter at Parksville Community Park.

As of the evening of Dec. 29, the man was in critical condition, said Foreman.

Oceanside RCMP staff Sgt. Marc Pelletier said the driver of the pickup truck co-operated at the scene.

“We had a traffic analyst attend the scene to determine whether any charges are warranted in this matter,” said Foreman. “Speed and impairment were not factors.”
