BC Hydro says the power outage caused by a transmission circuit failure affected 8,000 customers on the North Coast

The power is back on in Prince Rupert and Port Edward after a major outage that lasted nearly six hours.

The Skeena substation was damaged after a transmission circuit failure just before 11:30 a.m. that cut electricity to all residents and businesses of both cities, affecting 7,900 customers.

BC Hydro initially gave an estimate of 7 p.m. to restore service, but power came back on between 5 and 5:30.
