SURREY — A smoke alarm helped save the day for three men and a cat who escaped from a blazing house fire Whalley early Friday morning.
The fire was reported at 7:15 a.m., at 10823 140th St.
Surrey Battalion Chief Brian Carmichael said that when firefighters arrived the house was fully ablaze on both floors.
“The fellows were alerted by their smoke detector. They all got out with minor smoke inhalation,” Carmichael said. “They were treated at the scene then all refused medical care, to be transported to the hospital, so I’d say they’re all doing pretty good.”
A pet cat was singed, he said.
“The cat’s fine. The crew gave it a little oxygen. It was singed a bit but the cat is going to be fine.”
The Surrey fire department is still trying to determine what caused the fire and Carmichael told the Now-Leader it’s too early to say if it should be considered suspicious or not.
“It’s under investigation is all I can tell you,” he said. “We have an investigator there right now, checking it out. When the crews arrived the house was heavy smoke, flames coming out all sides and they upgraded it to a second alarm — we had approximately 25 personnel on scene.”
