A youth is facing a charge of possessing a weapon dangerous to the police – an airsoft pistol – after Surrey Mounties responded to a “frantic” report about an “out of control” fight behind Kennedy Train elementary school late Friday afternoon.
The West Newton neighbourhood saw a massive police presence at about 5:15 p.m., in the area of 82nd Avenue, a couple blocks east of Scott Road.
Staff Sergeant Joe Johal said six youths were arrested. The police response was swift and dramatic.
“Surrey RCMP received a call from a female who reported a fight amongst two youths and the frantic caller advised that one of the youth has a gun on him,” Johal told the Now-Leader. “In the meantime, we received several other calls of an out of control fight among 25-30 youths behind Kennedy Trail Elementary school.”
He said “at least” 25 or 30 youths ran through the schoolyard into a nearby townhouse complex after police descended on the area.
Johal said police seized an airsoft pistol from a “young male.”
“One charge of possession of a weapon dangerous to public will be forwarded to Crown Counsel against this youth,” he said. “He was subsequently driven to his residence and released to the parents with a court date for that charge.
“Nobody wanted to talk. There was no victim, nobody was injured at all. It ended up turning into nothing,” Johal said Friday night.
