Surrey Mounties continue to investigate an arson in Newton Friday morning in which a house fire left seven people without a home.
“It appears suspicious,” Corporal Scotty Schumann said Monday. “We have assumed the investigation and are calling it an arson at this point. So we’ve knocked on some doors in the neighbourhood to see if anybody had video or were witnesses and it doesn’t look like we were able to come up with any of that. So right now the file is still under investigation.”
The fire was called in at 9 a.m., at 68th Avenue and 140th Street.
“There was seven people that lived in the home,” Surrey Battalion Chief Reo Jerome told the Now-Leader. “It’s quite a loss. Nobody hurt; the fire was well involved when the crew got there, the fire ended up going through the roof.
“The crews did a great job of protecting the house next door,” Jerome said. “There was a little bit of damage, melted siding, so it was make sure the house next door was good and looked after.”
“It’s under investigation — RCMP are holding the scene right now,” he said Friday.
Police ask anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
