There could be some changes made at the Sportsplex, according to a five-year capital plan from the joint services committee presented to District of Clearwater council last Tuesday.
A possible solution to problems created by boys and girls sharing washroom facilities of Rooms #3 and #4 was presented. The reported noted that, with growing numbers in girls’ hockey, there is a growing need to offer proper facilities before an unfortunate incident occurs.
A previous proposal to add four new dressing rooms came in at $750,000, which was felt to be unreasonable, given the present economic climate.
However, the report suggested building a new washroom/shower facility between the two changing rooms as an alternative. Total cost of the alternative was put at $32,500.
Another proposal for 2011 would be replacing three areas of arena board at a cost of $45,000.
A mesh curling rink liner with circles, lines, etc. printed on it would reduce the time needed for installing the ice in the curling rink dramatically. It was estimated the $13,000 cost would be paid back in three years.
The report proposed replacing the large curbs presently in front of the arena doors with more attractive bollard and beam vehicle barriers. Cost of the upgrade was put at $17,500.
Items for future consideration include $150,000 to replace the curling rink floor. According to a report from an engineer in 1999, the concrete is of poor quality and will eventually heave and break the brine lines.
Also under future consideration would be a new Zamboni, valued at $100,000.
The joint services committee is made up of representatives from District of Clearwater plus Wells Gray Country (Area A).
