Use common ‘scents’: SD70

School District 70 has a new policy for schools in the district to become scent-considerate environments.

School District 70 has a new policy for schools in the district to become scent-considerate environments.

Superintendent of schools Greg Smyth said at Tuesday’s school board meeting it is “incredibly difficult” to implement a scent-free environment because some scents can be hard to mask.

He suggested  working towards “scent-considerate” environments instead.

Under the new policy students, parents and school district staff will be asked to avoid  heavily scented products when entering SD70 facilities.

The new policy will be presented and shared with staff and students in classrooms and through signage around schools.

Smyth said if there are situations when someone has a noticeably powerful scent, administration is authorized to ask students to be more sensitive when using body sprays and other scent-related products.
