In December, the City of Nelson issued building permits for an estimated $526,500 worth of construction.
That’s $300,000 in the commercial and industrial sector (entirely for a lumber storage shed at Home Hardware), $212,500 in renovations or additions to single unit dwellings, $8,000 in renovations to commercial or industrial properties, and $6,000 in renovations to government or institutional properties.
The total value of all construction for the calendar year was an estimated $45,732,072 compared with $29,650,460 in 2018, even though the total number of building permits was almost the same (183 in 2019 and 188 in 2018).
Why the big difference in value?
“We have had a significant number of larger developments,” the city’s finance manager Colin McClure told the Star, citing the examples of Nelson CARES projects at 205 Hall St. and on Nelson Avenue. “So it is not surprising that we have those numbers.”
In 2019, 146 multi-unit dwelling units were started compared with 68 in 2018.
McClure said 50 individual dwelling units were started in 2019 including single family homes, laneway homes and secondary suites, compared with 52 in 2018.
McClure reported these statistics to city council on Jan. 13, as he does each month.
