A Vancouver Police officer had a court appearance on Tuesday to face several sex-related charges.

Det. Const. James Fisher is charged with three counts of sexual exploitation, one count of sexual assault, one count of breach of trust and one count of attempt to obstruct justice.

His lawyer, David Crossin, appeared for him briefly in Surrey Provincial Court. The appearance was put forward to next month.

After the brief appearance, Crossin declined to comment on the case.

Outside Surrey Provincial Court, about a half-a-dozen women from different groups protested.

Hilla Kerner, with Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, believes the arrest of Fisher is part of a much larger problem in Vancouver.

Kerner said law enforcement needs to take sex assault much more seriously.

Fisher is a veteran officer who received the 2015 Chief Constable Unit Citation for extraordinary dedication for his part in the Vancouver Police Department’s Counter Exploitation Unit’s investigation into a child trafficking case.

He is due back in Surrey Provincial Court to fix a date for trial on Feb. 14 at 9 a.m.
