Vandals destroy sign at Hope Legion

Sign found to have fire damage and missing letters Tuesday morning

Legion members arrived at their Hope hall on Tuesday to find their sign completely destroyed by vandalism.

The blue lettering in the sheltered entrance have burn marks, and several missing letters. It’s some of the worst vandalism experienced by the Legion, and took place sometime overnight on Jan. 20.

The wall is charred black all around the signage, and there are burn marks below the sign along the stairwell, too. The sign was made by an elderly volunteer member who has a small shop within the hall.

The Legion reached out to the Standard to share the news of the vandalism, in the hopes that someone may have seen something.

Reaction online to the vandalism was swift, and angry.

Diane Johnson said on one Facebook group: “Really! In order to fix it, it comes out of the funds for veterans! Thanks a lot!”

Bev Fisher added: “This is disgusting. I hope they find out who did it and maybe make them pay to repair it!”

The Hope Legion, like all Legions around Canada, use their proceeds from fundraisers and from their food and drink sales to help local veterans with costs of living, including accessibility needs.
