Two air cadets from Vanderhoof were recognized for their roles in assisting at a fire in April this year through a national commendation.

Flight Corporal Hannah Kalyn and Corporal Gabriel Kalyn were presented with Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Commendations on Friday, Aug. 13 at the Connaught Youth Centre in Prince George.

On April 26, both Cadet Flight Corporal Hannah Kalyn and Corporal Gabriel Kalyn arrived at a neighbour’s home after sighting smoke near Vanderhoof.

In his commendation, Lieutenant-General Frances Allen, Vice Chief of the Defence staff said Hannah’s outstanding leadership and provision of calm and clear directions mobilized other bystanders and neighbours, as she immediately assisted by making the area safe of flammables and to protect the only egress road. Whereas, Corporal Gabriel diligently worked in the trees and brush to manage spot fires with water and snow, and built fuel breaks.

“We are incredibly proud of these two cadets, who demonstrated the Canadian values – and Canadian Armed Forces values – of service before self, leadership and courage during this incident. They are a testament to the type of youth the Cadet Program develops in communities across the country,” said Lieutenant-General Frances Allen.

The awards were presented by Commander Stephan Gresmak, Commanding Officer of Regional Cadet Support Unit (Pacific), on behalf of Lieutenant-General Allen.

Hannah and Gabriel are cadets with 899 Vanderhoof Royal Air Cadet Squadron. They joined the Cadet Program in Dec. 2019, and have enjoyed the drill and sports as well as virtual training programs offered in their community and nationally during the COVID-19 pandemic, stated a Aug. 13 news release.
