Vanderhoof Community Foundation has set up a COVID 2020 fitness challenge to “create a positive legacy of this time in quarantine.”

Vanderhoofians are being encouraged to put a team together and sign up for the fitness challenge, and any number of participants can team up.

The challenge which began April 20, will conclude on May 20. Participants can walk, run, cycle, roller blade and more. To register your team, visit the Vanderhoof Community Foundation’s Facebook page @vhfcf.

Teams are being requested to make a minimum $20 donation as the Vanderhoof Community Foundation is simultaneously raising funds for the foundation and $2,020 is the goal this year.

Mary Burkholder from the Vanderhoof Community Foundation told the Omineca Express that the foundation surpassed their financial goal on the second day of the competition.

The foundation aims to help the morale and connectedness of the community by encouraging people to physically stay fit during this time.

The ‘collective goal’ for people is to get 2020 km at least once during the challenge period. No, you don’t have to individually hit that goal.

Each team will have a captain who will gather the kilometres covered by their team and report to the foundation committee twice a week.

“We have 18 teams registered, aged from a new born to those over 70,” Burkholder said.

Participants need to respect social distance boundaries and not gather in groups to exercise, the foundation said.

Teams are also being encouraged to come up with catchy names and should challenge others they know in ‘friendly rivalry’ for kilometres covered and dollars raised.

Once social distancing rules are relaxed, the foundation will invite teams to a community celebration.
