The Senior’s Friendship Centre in Vanderhoof has an upgraded kitchen, thanks to $50,000 in funding received from Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society.
To back it up a little, NKDFS initially approved $20,000 for the project in May, 2019, said Britta Boudreau, manager for NKDFS.
A subsequent grant of $30,000 was then awarded in September last year. Work on the upgrade began in October, 2019 and was completed in February this year.
The official open house for the upgraded facility was held at the Friendship Centre on March 9.
Boudrea said that through this project, the kitchen at the Centre has been upgraded to a commercial standard kitchen which includes the following:
• Installing a gas range and range hood
• Installing a commercial refrigerator
• Installing a commercial dishwasher/sanitizer
• Installing all new stainless steel counter tops
• Installing a dish-washing area with 2 sinks; a hand washing area; and a food sink area
• Replacing flooring and completing paint touch-ups
• Providing a location for Caterers to prepare food during the day, leading up to their event
• Meeting all BC Health Standards for kitchens
• Adding an exterior entrance for the kitchen
• Increasing access between the main hall and the kitchen
“The community of Vanderhoof was so excited on March 9 to see the opening of the new kitchen at the Seniors Friendship Centre. This facility is such a necessity for all kinds of events, as we need these spaces for community gatherings. The modern kitchen will make this centre even better,” said Mayor Gerry Thiessen.
