Local students who use e-cigarettes may face suspension for smoking while under school supervision.

School District 22 implemented district-wide practices for handling vaping and e-cigarettes Monday.

“Recent research from the University of Waterloo indicates that youth who vape are more likely to smoke cigarettes than those who don’t vape,” said Truman Spring, director of student support services. “In fact, these children and adolescents were more than twice as likely to report being susceptible to smoking cigarettes.”

The reports also suggest that e-cigarettes can be converted for use with illicit substances.

On first offence, the electronic cigarette will be confiscated from the students and parents may retrieve the e-cigarette from school administrators. On second offence, the vape will be confiscated and handed to RCMP. On third offence, the student caught smoking may be suspended to the board where their educational future will be decided.
