A driver narrowly avoided injury to herself or others as her vehicle collided head-on into the first floor of the Berwick Comox Valley Saturday morning.
Around 10 a.m., a grey SUV jumped the curb in the roundabout parking lot off 1700 Comox Avenue in front of the residence, hit a wooden bench, then collided into a service door between two units.
Berwick maintenance manager Darryl Calnan said the driver appeared to be her 90s, but was uninjured following the crash.
He added one person was in the adjacent suite on the ground floor, but the resident was uninjured. The suite did sustain some damage, and noted most likely the resident will be able to move into another suite temporarily while repairs take place.
Comox Fire Rescue assistant chief Jim Lariviere said when he first received the call, he was expecting the vehicle to be in the front side of the building.
“This is a little unusual that it is where it is … we’re not sure what caused the driver to go into the building like this. She missed two units and hit the door – there is damage to the load-bearing wall.”
He confirmed she was treated by ambulance but did not sustain any major injuries.
