A single-vehicle crash snarled traffic on the Haney Bypass Monday afternoon at about 2:30 p.m.
The vehicle went out of control in the westbound lanes, near the Anita Place Tent City.
According to one witness, and the SUV skidding off the road while trying to avoid another vehicle that had slowed, then rolled and hit a tree outside of the homeless camp.
Gary Ward said he called 911 and an ambulance and firetrucks arrived.
“Someone from the camp, I think, sprayed the engine area with a fire extinguisher, but it wasn’t on fire, just steam from the radiator. Good to do just in case though,” Ward said.
The occupants of the vehicle both got out, he added, but were shaken.
“The tree prevented the SUV from going through the camp,” Ward said.
A passing truck driver stopped and was directing traffic around the accident.
