A Vernon man’s pickup truck is likely to be written off as the engine compartment became fully-engulfed in flames Monday morning.

Dean Wakefield, Vernon Fire Rescue Services captain, said six firefighters and one engine were on the scene of the vehicle fire, located in the driveway of a home on 27th Avenue, around 7:30 a.m. Jan. 20.

“The fire was basically under the hood,” Wakefield said. “It (the truck) wasn’t right next to the home, but close to it.”

Wakefield said the damage was contained largely to the engine of the vehicle, with only minor damage to the truck’s cab. However, he suspects it is likely to be written off by ICBC.

The homeowner was at home at the time of the incident and called 911.

“He was inside. He got up this morning and noticed his truck was on fire,” Wakefield said.

The homeowner, who is also the owner of the vehicle, used a fire extinguisher to knock down as much of the blaze as possible before firefighters arrived on scene. He also moved a nearby trailer away from the blaze.

Traffic was reduced to single-lane alternating as the crew fought the fire. The RCMP helped control traffic. Wakefield said the engine returned to the station at about 8:10 a.m.

“The crew did a really good job for hitting it pretty quick,” Wakefield said.

No injuries were sustained in the fire. An investigation into the blaze’s cause is underway, but Wakefield said it doesn’t appear suspicious.
