Coroner releases names of the two women who died in Saturday evening crash

The names of the two women who were killed in crash in Vernon late Saturday evening have been released.

Chantel Diane Bazin, aged 22, and Kayla Elizabeth Cartwright, aged 26, both of Kelowna, died in a collision on Highway 97 just before midnight Saturday near Vernon.

Bazin was the driver, and Cartwright the front seat passenger, of a vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 97 when their vehicle slid across the centreline into the northbound lane, colliding with an on-coming vehicle. Both women were deceased at the scene. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were taken to hospital for treatment.

The roads were wet at the time, and road conditions are being investigated as a possible factor in the incident.

The Coroners Service and Vernon RCMP continue to investigate this death.

The families of the deceased have been notified of their deaths. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

Witnesses are being sought from a crash which claimed the lives of two women in Vernon early Sunday morning.

Police and the coroners service continue to investigate the two-vehicle crash which took place  on Highway 97, at the 27th Street overpass, shortly after midnight Saturday.

Highway 97 was closed in both directions one-kilometre north of Vernon until approximately 6 a.m. Sunday.

“The RCMP are  asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or were at the scene to assist the victims to please call our office at 250-545-7171 and speak to our investigators,” said Gordon Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.

The official release of the names of the two woman who died in this crash will be released by the coroners service.

Two Kelowna women have died in a Vernon motor vehicle accident.

At about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, RCMP members received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 97 at the 27th Street overpass.

“The investigation has revealed a southbound vehicle crossed the centre line of the highway and collided with a northbound vehicle,” said Cpl. Joseph Leeson, with the RCMP.

“Two female passengers from the first vehicle, aged 22 and 26 from Kelowna, were deceased at the scene of the collision while a  32-year-old female and 26-year-old male in the second vehicle from Armstrong were transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

The police and the B.C. Coroners Service are still investigating the cause of the collision.

Highway 97 was closed for about six hours.
