Vernon pair injured in restaurant crash

Two Vernon people were among four injured after a car drove into a West Kelowna restaurant Saturday afternoon.

Just after 12:30 p.m, West Kelowna RCMP received a report of a van colliding with the Kelly O’Bryan’s Restaurant in the 3400 block of Carrington Road.

The restaurant and its patio was busy during the lunch hour and, initially, numerous injuries were reported.

“A grey Dodge Caravan had apparently accelerated from the parking lot through the patio and into the side of the restaurant,” said RCMP spokesperson Const. Kris Clark.

Several people were injured including a 19-year old Vernon woman who had to be removed from underneath the vehicle.

Also injured were a 20-year-old Vernon man, and a 30-year-old woman and 26-year-old man, both from West Kelowna.

The driver, a 78-year-old West Kelowna man, and his wife were briefly trapped inside the van due to its resting position against an overhead door.

The restaurant staff, bystanders and emergency crews worked together to provide first aid to the injured until B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics could arrive.

“The four people injured in the crash as well as the driver and his wife were all taken to Kelowna General Hospital with undisclosed, non-life threatening injuries,” said Clark, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Police have requested a licencing review be conducted on the driver and no charges have yet been laid.
