Vernon taxpayers own another chunk of land downtown.
The city has purchased the New Delhi Restaurant building at 2905 29th St. for $1.1 million.
“It’s part of the long-term plan for east/west traffic movement through the community,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky.
The concept of extending 25th Avenue to 30th Avenue, and ultimately 27th Street, has been suggested for a number of years.
“Some of the other options for east/west traffic are no longer available,” said Sawatzky, adding there is no immediate timeline for the project to proceed.
Opposition to the purchase came from Coun. Patrick Nicol.
“The price and the length of the commitment for it to take place are too much,” said Nicol.
“The overall impact financially is not what I thought it should be.”
The New Delhi lot is among a number of properties owned by the city, including the former Coldstream Hotel site, the location of the former Vernon Flower Shop and the old Vernon Medical Clinic lands.
