Vernon trustee Kelly Smith returns to top job while Lumby's Mitzi Fortin is vice-chairperson

With no other names put forward, Kelly Smith has been acclaimed as chairperson of the Vernon School District.

Nominated by vice-chairperson Mitzi Fortin, Smith returned to her seat at the head of the table and thanked her fellow trustees.

“I will try to continue to move this meeting along and ensure you all get a fair chance to speak,” she said, at Tuesday’s Vernon School District monthly public board meeting.

First elected to the board in 2011, Smith is a retired teacher who taught for 33 years at both Charles Bloom and W.L. Seaton secondary schools, 25 of those years as a learning assistance/special education teacher.

Also elected by acclamation as vice-chairperson is Mitzi Fortin, a longtime trustee who represents Lumby and area, and nominated by trustee Mollie Bono.

Fortin previously served six years as a trustee before taking a break, returning to the board in 2011 when she was re-elected. She is a community librarian at the Lumby branch of the Okanagan Regional Library.
