The Victoria Police Department is conducting what is being called one of the most extensive and detailed searches on Vancouver Island in an effort to find clues of a missing Victoria man.
Dana McKellar, 51, was reported missing in September 2014. Through an investigation, it was revealed that McKellar had been previously assaulted in July.
On Tuesday, VicPD and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit launched an extensive search of a rural Saanich property in the 100-block of Goward Road in the Prospect Lake neighbourhood to find evidence, including human remains, in search of McKellar.
Officers have been granted a search warrant for the property and have started the large-scale examination that includes a large field behind several residential homes.
So far, police have uncovered barrels of unlabelled content and have called the Capital Regional District’s Hazmat team to identify and secure the contents.
Several bones have also been found on scene that police say are not human.
Officers are expected to be on the scene until early next week.
Police also searched a property in the 1200-block of Burnside Road West earlier this year which led them to the current property.
Anyone with information is asked to call the VicPD on the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
