With the turning of the calendar, the first baby born in all of B.C. in 2014 turned out to be right here in Greater Victoria.
Daryl Yen was brought into the world by Victoria General Hospital staff at 12:01 a.m. on January 1, making the eight pound, five ounce baby the first born in B.C. in 2014.
Mother Daisy Tsai, 26, had her baby by C-section, with the operation starting just before midnight and the baby brought into the world just in time for the title.
“I just kept watching the clock, sure it’s going to be the last day or the first day,” Tsai said. “I just said ‘As soon as possible.'”
Tsai went through about five hours of labour before a C-section was decided upon.
Parents Tsai and Jason Yen, live in Saanich. Yen is a dentist and Tsai teaches piano.
The baby’s name, Daryl, comes from the show The Walking Dead.
As to the treasured title of New Years Baby, the parents say they have much to be thankful for.
“It’s good to have a baby any time,” Yen said. “It doesn’t matter what date, as long as it’s a healthy baby, we’re happy.”
