A deliberately set fire destroyed a vehicle and damaged a commercial building downtown Chilliwack in the early hours Tuesday.
The blaze was called in to the Chilliwack Fire Department at approximately 3:30 a.m. in the 46000-block of Victoria Avenue.
Firefighters responded from Halls 1, 4 and 6 and, on arrival, witnessed a vehicle on fire in front of a commercial business, Chilliwack Towing. By the time crews arrived, fire from the vehicle had already extended into the soffits of the roof.
A neighbour in an apartment across the street filming the fire said he could feel the heat. After a few minutes, arcing from powerlines was visible as the heat intensified.
Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and they managed to contain the damage to the front portion of the building. The interior of the building sustained minor fire and smoke damage, according to the Chilliwack Fire Department.
In the light of day Tuesday morning the burnt out vehicle still sat in front of the damaged building.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.
“This fire is believed to be deliberately set and is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP.”
