A large fire consumed almost an acre of grass in Cloverdale on Friday evening.
Steve Serbic, assistant fire chief with the Surrey Fire Service, said the department was called to the area of 184th Street and Colebrook Road around 7:20 p.m. Friday (July 2) and crews had the fire under control within in an hour.
He said the area was covered in “hay-like” grass.
However, Serbic said the firefighters had to use three water tenders and two engines to put out the fire.
“It was about 700 feet from a roadway and there’s no hydrants there.

The cause of the fire, as of yet, was still not being reported.
“It’s the start of the season so it’s something we’ve got to expect until we get a bit of rain,” said Serbic, noting the fire wasn’t close to any structures.
Weather conditions have left much of the province tinder dry, and fire officials are advising everyone – including those in the Lower Mainland – to be extra vigilant.
