The continuous downpour across the mid-Island this week is causing flooding in some areas of the Regional District of Nanaimo.

The region has lands prone to seasonal flooding, particularly low-lying coastal areas and near rivers and streams. At this time, the RDN has received reports of localized flooding in the French Creek, Qualicum River and Coombs areas.

In response to this and to be proactive, a Level 1 Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to monitor the situation and provide assistance to residents as required.

Sandbags and sand have been delivered to the Coombs-Hilliers Fire Hall at 3241 Alberni Hwy. and to Dashwood Fire Hall, 230 Hobbs Rd. They are available to the public.

Residents are advised they need to fill and place sandbags on their own. It takes about two people an average of about an hour to fill and place 100 sandbags, providing a one-foot-high, 20-foot-long wall. Those placing sandbag walls should make sure to have enough sand, sandbags, shovels and time to prepare properly, the RDN said in a written release. Those who require assistance filling and placing sandbags should contact neighbours, family and friends.

“The safety of our residents is fundamental to all,” said Bill Veenhof RDN chair. “Our staff’s proactive approach, both on the ground checking areas prone to flooding, engaging with the community and communicating how to prepare for flooding, are important steps.”

RDN staff will also monitor and provide updates on social media and its website as appropriate. More general information can be seen on the website on how to properly fill and place sandbags at www.rdn.bc.ca/flooding. Residents are reminded to call 911 for any life-threatening emergency and report non-life threatening flooding to the RDN at 778-762-3553.
