A large crowd gathered Saturday to take in the natural beauty of Chilliwack’s trails and the Vedder River as they celebrated the completion of the Vedder Rotary Loop Trail on Saturday.
The grand opening of the 20.8-kilometre trail, which runs along the north and south sides of the river, came after 24 years of construction and trail building.
“This is a featured landmark in Chilliwack. People know about the Rotary Trail, they come to the Rotary Trail specifically when they come to Chilliwack, and they bring their friends and visitors to the Rotary Trail. And why do they do it? Because it connects our community,” said Michael Berger with Rotary Club of Chilliwack.
“You see the Rotary Trail as a safe and inviting place meant for people of all ages, all abilities and all types. You see walkers, runners, cyclists… everybody can enjoy the Rotary Trail. The sheer beauty of the trail is outstanding.”
Additions to the trail in the future include expanding parking on both the north and south side, installing washrooms and drinking fountains, improving river access, and installing a pedestrian bridge.
“This really is the crown jewel here. You will not find a better recreational, educational and environmental opportunity to get out and enjoy this close here in — not just Chilliwack — but in the Fraser Valley,” said Jason Lum, Fraser Valley Regional District chair.
The City of Chilliwack, Rotary Club of Chilliwack, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition, and the FVRD were all partners in making the completion of the $5-million trail a success.
