A quick response by Cranberry Fire Department helped put out two grass fires on the side of the highway between Nanaimo and Ladysmith early Wednesday afternoon that were likely the result of littering.

One of the fires erupted next to the southbound lanes across from the Country Kitchen rest stop while the other was just past Haslam Creek.

The initial scene across from the rest stop caused upwards of 40 feet of damage.

Fire chief Ron Gueulette said the likely cause of both fires were discarded cigarette butts.

Both scenes were contained quickly and the fires were contained and extinguished in about an hour.
