On any normal day, the sight of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks rushing to Mission Secondary would make anyone nervous.
However, on Wednesday morning, that unsettling sight was all part of a Mission First Responders/Career Development event.
A vehicle crash scenario was set up at the local high school’s bus loop, just off Grand Street and police, fire and ambulance all responded to the fake scene, as if it were real, as students looked on.
The event was held “basically to expose kids to a scenario that involves all three services working together,” explained Mike Miller, career co-ordinator at Mission Public Schools.
During the morning, an ICBC presentation took place on distracted and impaired driving, then the crash scenario, followed by questions from the students
Miller said it allows Students to find out the things necessary in order to go down these career paths.
Sonia Gill, career advisor at Mission Secondary School said the school has been trying to host one career event a month.
“We had a lot of kids who are interested in becoming, or asking questions about how to go into the police or fire. So we thought we would create an event that brings all three first responders together and to have it more hands on so students could see each of them respond to a crash scene,” said Gill.
