An early-morning fatal collision on a winding Chilliwack road has left one young woman dead and three other people injured after the car they were in left the road and hit a power pole on Saturday.

Megan Sawatzky of Abbotsford, 20, died at the scene of the single-vehicle crash westbound on Vedder Mountain Road near Cultus Lake Road after the driver lost control of the car around 3:30 a.m. on March 7.

RCMP, firefighters and BC Ambulance Service were all called to the scene where the black Hyundai was found on its side in a ditch.

An air ambulance was called for a 19-year-old woman from the Fraser Valley who suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital. Two 21-year-old men from Abbotsford were also taken to hospital.

Two liquor bottles were seen being photographed by investigators, but Cpl. Mike Rail said the RCMP cannot comment on whether alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. Chilliwack RCMP’s General Investigation Support Team (GIST), BC Coroners Service and Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) continue to gather evidence in the investigation.

The road was closed in both directions for more than seven hours while police investigated the collision and BC Hydro repaired the damage.
