SURREY —Police have arrested a man after destroying a “small suspicious package” in the City Centre on Saturday. They say they found it in his vehicle during a traffic stop, in the 10100-block of King George Boulevard.

This was at about 8:15 p.m.

Surrey RCMP Corporal Elenore Sturko said the driver, whose name has not been released, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. After he was arrested, she said, his vehicle was searched and police seized “suspected” methamphetamine and more than $5,000 in cash. “No charges have been laid as the investigation is ongoing,” she said.

“Investigators suspected the package may have been an improvised explosive device.”

Sturko said the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit removed the mystery package remotely and “disposed of it in a safe area and manner.”

The remnants, she said, are being analyzed.
