DELTA — A semi-truck driver was pronounced dead on the scene after a single-vehicle crash on River Road Thursday night.
The semi, which was pulling a container, crashed into a power pole on the 8200 block of River Road around 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 11. The vehicle left the roadway, rolling on its roof and crashing onto an industrial property.
The driver, a 56-year-old Surrey resident, was trapped in the vehicle. Firefighters worked to free the driver, but he was pronounced dead on scene.
Although it is still early in the investigation, police believe weather conditions did play a role in the crash.
Delta police and BC Hydro are still on the scene, and will remain there for several more hours to clear the scene and reconnect power to local businesses.
Because the crash involved power lines, a number of safety protocols needed to be followed, prolonging the investigation and the closure of the road.
